spaChances are that a lot of us have been cutting back on our spending in areas that seem “unnecessary” or “luxurious”. Makes sense: Budgets are tighter…economy is up in the air…and saving is a higher priority. So more likely than not, a trip to the spa is not in the offing too soon, or at least not as regularly as it used to be.

Going to the spa, however, provides a lot of benefits beyond the touchy-feely stuff. Getting a massage , or even a facial, can provide benefits of relaxation, stress release and flushing of toxins. The mind-body benefits are hard to argue. As a result, if you can’t get to the spa, try making spa a part of your life at home. It is cheap, fun and rewarding. Here are a few ways to indulge and decompress:

Home Hydrotherapy : I talk about bathes a lot. The truth is, they can be extremely therapeutic and relaxing. They also can help your muscles loosen, letting go of the tension that builds up on a daily basis. Use bath oils to help curb dehydration of your skin. Couples Massage with a Twist: At the spa, a couple’s massage is one where you and another person get a massage together. At home, you can morph this into giving one another massages. Take turns on different nights. Dedicate two nights a week as massage nights. Alternate who gives and who gets so that both of you benefit. If you are single, you can always opt for a “friendship” massage. Ask a friend to partake in giving and receiving shoulder, neck and back massages. Mani-Pedi: Personally, this is where I cut back my spending. I’ve started giving myself manicures and pedicures instead of going to a nail salon. I discovered that I actually like it better. Take Spa Home: Water Circuits

The water circuit , a type of hydrotherapy , originated in Ancient Rome where citizens would partake in bathing rituals that were considered medically beneficial. Individuals would circulate between baths of warm water, hot water and cold water, in order to ward off disease and ailments. With some creativity, you can enjoy these ancient rituals from the comforts of your own home. Modern day benefits include:

Increased metabolic process which can aid in weight loss Faster recovery from injuries Strengthening of your cardiovascular system Detoxification Relaxation and reduced stress

The Process: Expose your body to hot water (No higher than 106 degrees Fahrenheit) for 5 – 10 minutes. Then expose your body to cold water for 1 minute. Repeat this cycle for up to 1 hour, making sure that you end on a cold cycle.

Your Body’s Reaction: Hot water causes blood vessels to dilate, causing the blood to flow to the skin, bringing toxins to the surface. Further, your heart rate increases, due to the extreme temperature. Exposure to cold water constricts the blood vessels, stimulating the thyroid and lymphatic system to flush out metabolic and cellular waste.

If you have a Bath Tub and a Separate Shower (IDEAL):

Draw a hot bath in the bath tub and sit in it for 5 to 10 minutes. Move to the shower and take a cold shower for 1 minute. Move back into the bath tub and unstop the drain. As old water drains out, fill the tub with fresh hot water. When temperature and water level are high enough, restop the drain and sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Get out and take a cold shower for one minute. Repeat cycle for 20 to 30 minutes, ending on a cold cycle.

If you have a Bath Tub and a Shower in the same Unit:

Draw a hot bath in the bath tub and sit in it for 5 to 10 minutes. Unstop the drain and turn on the shower. Stand under cold water for one minute. Switch to hot water and stand under for 5 to 10 minutes. Change back to cold water and stand under for 1 minute Repeat steps 5 and 6 for 20 to 30 minutes from beginning to end, making sure you end on the cold cycle.

If you only have a Shower:

Start with a hot shower for 5 to 10 minutes. Switch to cold water and stand under for one minute. Repeat cycle for 20 to 30 minutes, ending on a cold cycle.
